An air pump is not a necessity but will help make it easier to keep your fish healthy. A well kept aquarium with a suitable stocking will not need an air pump. An air-pump will however help keep the water oxygenated if the water quality goes down due to overfeeding, a dead fish or a number of other reasons. It can be the difference between a slight dip in water quality and disaster. You do not need an air pump but i highly recommend that you get one. They are cheap and can save the life of your fish.
