Traditionally, the best piece of advice anyone could give you before buying a mattress was to try before you buy, but things have changed. After all, lying on a mattress for a few minutes in a showroom can't compare to actually sleeping on one. What's more, the well-tested mattress you try in a shop inevitably feels different from the brand-new one that gets delivered to your door and may feel completely unlike what you were expecting depending on whether you have a solid or slatted bed base. There's lots to think about before splashing out.

Thankfully, though, the new generation of bed-in-a-box mattresses have made things easier than ever. Most of these come with a 100-day money-back guarantee so you can make your mind up without any financial risk, and be absolutely sure that they're a good match for you and your home. What's more, they're such good quality that the generous returns policies are taken up much less than you'd think.

Bed-in-a-box mattresses are often good value for money, but their prices have begun to creep upwards over the last couple of years. The Eve Light bucks this trend by offering much of what’s great about the original Eve mattress in a more affordable package. If you’re looking for the best mattress under £500, you can’t go too far wrong with this excellent budget model.

The general rule of thumb is that a mattress needs changing every seven years, although some last a bit longer and a fair amount shorter than that. Telltale signs that it may be time to get a new mattress include not sleeping well and waking up with aches, pains or stiffness. If you sleep better in other beds or you don’t sleep as soundly as you did this time last year, this should also be a wake-up call.
